France Lost but Paris Always Wins

"We will miss you, Mr. James," our hotel concierge said when I went downstairs to settle our bill this evening as we leaven an early flight tomorrow morning. "You will return soon?."
Not soon enough, I told him as I shook his hand and assured him that the year would not pass without us here. And I especially thought how wonderful it is that we have made a great impression here. Especially in these times, I couldn't be happier to project a positive image to the French.
There's really no great recap of the day. We spent the morning exploring the catacombs, and with every step, I could feel the history of this city. So many nameless buried beneath the city streets. With the heat disappointing slightly, the miles of stone caverns under the city's streets was a great way to beat the sun. John and I enjoyed another lunch visit to one of favorite cafes in the 15th, took the wrong way on the metro (a first for us!) and had an afternoon of impromptu shopping and cocktails. We've finished packing and yes, all that luggage has come in handy. We have lot of new stuff.
But this isn't just a recap of the day. This trip, more than our others has just reinforced our love for Paris (and each other of course). At one point, I asked if John were disappointed we didn't get out to more arrondissements this time.
"No," he said simply. "I really loved that we stuck close to home."
Home. Paris is home. I don't really know any other way to describe it. I wish all of you could experience this city with the people you love. Having Holli and Nicole here was such an added bonus. Combine that with Sue and her husband during our honeymoon, my friend Michael in December, and not to mention my friend Serge from next door in Belgium, we've been so blessed. We know we have to leave, but Paris never leaves us and we never truly leave it. There was a bottle of wine waiting for us tonight to toast to so many things during our annual last evening in Paris dinner restaurant. We've come so far from where we were in the past. We've gained new friends, made old ones even stronger and made some incredible memories. France may have lost out on their World Cup chances this year, but they - like us - will be back. Keep with us on our adventures, there's never a dull moment. Especially when you discover, you are almost at the weight limit on your suitcases, but this is Paris and it's never too late to get a new valise. That, my friends, is a story ending you'll just have to imagine.
